Children's Vision

Vision disorders are a common disability and one of the most prevalent handicapping conditions during childhood. Since the majority of learning in early school-age children is primarily through the visual sense, it is important for all children to receive comprehensive eye examinations prior to entering school. The earlier a vision problem is diagnosed and treated, the less of a negative impact it will have on a child's overall development.

As many as one in four school-age children have vision problems.  Vision problems not diagnosed and treated have a negative impact on learning. Vision problems with the potential to impact learning include skills related to sustained reading. Problems with eye movement control, eye focusing or accommodation, and eye teaming or binocularity can affect efficiency of learning despite a child having 20/20 vision. Although the most prevalent eye problem in children is refractive errors that affect visual acuity, there are additional skills important for visual information acquisition. The examination of children for eye and vision problems should therefore include all visual functions of acuity, binocularity, eye motility and focusing, and ocular health, including neurodevelopmental and congenital eye abnormalities. The identification of all eye and vision problems a child may have can only be through a comprehensive eye examination, not a vision screening. Due to the importance of early identification and therefore treatment of eye and vision problems, the American Optometric Association recommends all children receive their first eye examination before the age of one year. National estimates suggest a rate of vision screening between a low of 2 percent to a high of 64 percent, and vision screenings are only able to identify 27 percent of the children who actually have vision problems. Furthermore, the data showing the proportion of these children who fail the vision screening and subsequently receive comprehensive vision care and treatment of vision problems is uncertain.

Vision screenings are not a substitute for a comprehensive eye examination that evaluates not only acuity and eye health, but also focusing, eye teaming, eye tracking, and visual processing skills - skills needed for academic success. Excellent vision starts with seeing clearly but it does not end there; focusing skills and eye teaming skills are important for school readiness and academic success.

              *  Vision problems left untreated may result in the reduction of the efficiency of the visual system. Timely identification and treatment of visual acuity and visual performance problems will allow a child to perform at his or her full potential.
              *  An eye/vision assessment conducted as part of a pediatric well child visit or school physical cannot substitute for regular professional eye  care. Vision screening is a limited process of surveying certain aspects of vision problem areas. An exam by an eye doctor is essential for the diagnosis and treatment of eye and vision problems prior to entry into school.
              *  There is more to vision than reading the 20/20 line on an eyechart. It is also necessary to have both eyes work together, track objects and focus at different distances. You can learn more about this on our Vision Therapy page.
              *  All children should receive a comprehensive eye and vision examination to diagnose and treat any deficiencies in ocular health, visual acuity, refractive status, ocular motility, focusing and binocular vision prior to entering school. The first eye examination should take place by the age of one year. Subsequent examinations should parallel child development of social, motor, and cognitive skills and are recommended to take place at the age of three years, and every two years thereafter. Symptomatic and at risk children such as those struggling in school, may need to have examinations more frequently.

Babies learn to see just as they learn to walk and talk. Focusing the eyes, moving the eyes accurately and using the visual information the eyes send to the brain are all learned skills. Eyes that are healthy and have good vision are critical in proper development of how infants and children learn to see.

It is recommended that infants have a first eye exam between 6-12 months even for healthy babies. The doctors at Davison Road Optical provide a no charge eye exam to infants thru the InfantSee program. InfantSee is a public health program by the American Optometric Association that promotes eye and vision care by offering a no cost public service to infants 6 to 12 months of age. Both doctors at our office are proud participants in this program.  The InfantSee.org website has more details.

Signs of eye and vision problems for infants include: excessive tearing, a constant eye turn, extreme sensitivity to light, a pupil that appears white and red or crusty eye lids. If you have concerns about your child’s eye health, please call and schedule an appointment with our office at 716-434-8063.

Glasses and contact lenses are good options for children who need vision correction. Contact lenses provide a number of benefits beyond simply correcting a child’s vision. A study following nearly 50 nearsighted children over three years, found children who wore contact lenses felt better about their physical appearance, acceptance among friends and their ability to play sports. Those children who disliked wearing glasses also felt more confident about their schoolwork when wearing contact lenses. The maturity level required to wear contact lenses varies among individuals. This is a decision to be made between the child, the parents and the doctor.

Eye Disease Treatment

Optometrists are trained in the diagnosis and treatment of eye disease, including post-operative surgical care, glaucoma and eye infections.

If you are diagnosed with an eye disease, you will want the best care available. Treatment of eye disease may involve prescription or over-the-counter eye drops. Often, a holistic approach is best and this will be discussed. Whatever we recommend, you can be sure that your ....

vision and eye health are our primary focus. Consultation with a sub-specialty is sometimes required and surgical consultation is available at Davison Road Optical. If the care of sub-specialist, such as a retinal or low vision specialist is indicated, we will assist you in scheduling the appointment with the right provider.
Cataract, Lasik and other surgical procedures are co-managed at our offices with the surgeons at Fichte, Endl and Elmer Eyecare.
We treat most non-surgical eye disease, such as: conjunctivis (pink eye), corneal ulcer and abrasions, blepharitis, ocular allergies, glaucoma, dry eye syndrome, removal of superficial corneal foreign bodies, flashes and floaters, keratoconic contact lens fitting and issues requiring bandage contact lenses.
Diopsys electo-diagnostic testing is available at Davison Road Optical. Electroretinogram (pERG) and Visually Evoked Potential (VEP) testing for retinal, optic nerve and visual tract function is valuable for many conditions. Multiple Sclerosis, optic neuritis, optic atrophy and amblyopia are a few examples of issues that can be followed with pERG or VEP. The website, http://diopsys.com, provides more information.

Most eye emergencies will be seen on a same-day basis.

The technology necessary for the best glaucoma care is immediately available including: Octopus thershold visual field testing, Zeiss Cirrus OCT (https://www.zeiss.com/meditec/us/products/ophthalmology-optometry/glaucoma/diagnostics/fundus-imaging/cirrus-photo.html), Optomap wide field retinal imaging including fundus auto-flourescence (https://www.optos.com/en/products/daytona/), corneal topography, gonioscopy and corneal ultrasound pachymetry.

Specialized co-management and consultation is routinely utilized when indicated. Some patients that need to see an out of town specialist are happy to have their care co-managed to save them travel time. Call our office with any questions. We are happy to accept new patients and will assist you in transferring your records.

Contact Lenses

At Davison Road Optical we fit the top brands of contact lenses and will choose the contact lenses that are the best for both your eyes and your lifestyle. We strive to preserve eye health as well as patient comfort and clear vision while fitting contact lenses. Call today to schedule an appointment.

We fit contact lenses for a wide variety of diagnosis with both soft and rigid gas permeable contact lenses:
Myopia (nearsighted)
Hyperopia (farsighted)
Astigmatism
Bifocals

Why Consider Contact Lenses?
Since contact lenses are placed onto the eye they move with the eye allowing for clear vision any direction you look.
Unlike glasses, contact lenses do not get in the way of your activities.
With contact lenses you get a larger field of view and no frames are present to interfere with your vision.

How to care for contact lenses.
Wash and dry hands prior to handling contact lenses.
Do not wear contact lenses longer than instructed by your optometrist, It can interfere with the heath of your eye and cause infections.
Replace your contact lens case every 3 months or sooner.
Remove lenses daily or as instructed by your optometrist.
After removing contact lenses from the case empty the solution and store the case in a clean dry area with the lids off. This decreases the chance of contamination from bacteria.
Replace contact lenses as directed by your optometrist, daily, biweekly or monthly.
The fit of contact lenses must be evaluated each year even if you do not notice a change in your vision in order to maintain healthy eyes.

Immediately remove contact lenses and call your eye care professional if this occurs:
Sudden onset of blurred vision
Red, irritated eyes
Pain in or around the eye

Specialty Contact Lenses

Orthokeratology
The process of using a contact lens over night to shape the front of the eye allowing for clear vision throughout the day without contact lenses or glasses. This process is great for preteens and teens that want to get out of glasses. It also works for patients that cannot tolerate wearing contact lenses daily but do not want to wear glasses. Call today to schedule an eye exam and discuss orthokeratology with one of our optometrist.

ORDER CONTACT LENSES

Optical Imaging

At Davison Road Optical we have not only tried and true equipment, we have the latest technology and the trained staff to make the correct diagnosis. Below is a description of just of a few of our tools and the capabilities they give us.

MEDMONT CORNEAL TOPOGRAPHER

This corneal topographer is used to create a map of the front of the eye. This is useful in fitting contact lenses, evaluating a patient for refractive surgery and confirming the diagnosis of certain diseases that alter the shape of the cornea.

OPTOS
The Optos is used to take a photo of the back of the eye, the retina. Normal retinal cameras take a 45 degree image but the optos takes a 200 degree image! This allows for earlier detection of eye diseases. This screening is offered to all of our patients at their yearly eye exam.

ZEISS CIRRUS 600 OCT

This instrument is both an OCT, used to measure the layers of the back of the eye, as well as a camera. This allows for 2 different tests at the same time. The OCT measures the thickness of the macula which is necessary in diseases such as macular degeneration. The OCT is also used in glaucoma to measure the optic nerve and any changes that occur to the nerve over time. This allows our doctors to best manage these diseases and many more.
